Origins and History: Believed to be the result of a cross-breeding between domestic cats
imported from Siberia and Ukraine and local cats. Newski, owned by Hans and Betti Sehulz
were the first to raise Siberian cats, but a dozen or so were recorded in Western Europe in
1990, and the first one appeared in France in 1991. E. Terrell, owner of a cattery in the US,
Starpoint, owned the first American Siberian. The breed went on to be recognized by FIFe in
1997, followed by TICA in 1998, who then edited a standard in honour of the new breed.
Personality: Very energetic, it can be active. Strong headed but playful, they are nevertheless
good with children and other cats. Very attached to its master, it is affectionate. As they love
climbing and water, they have a rustic side to them.
Additional notes: They will only be fully developed by the age of 5 years old. Their fur and
active lifestyle makes them less likely to enjoy being house cats. Relatively low-maintenance,
they need a weekly grooming, except during shedding season ,where brushing them daily is
necessary.
