Oriental Shorthair

Breed: Oriental Shorthair
Nationality: Thailand, Great Britain
Breed standards:
Weight (kg) : 4 to 6.5 kg
Size : Medium
Fur type : short
Coat: The colour must be uniform, but the Oriental
Shorthair can be white, blue, chocolate, lilac,
cinnamon, fawn, tortoise-shell, smoke or silver.
Tabby, stripped, streaked or spotted fur may be
found.
Origins and History: Originated from a cross between a Siamese and a European Longhaired of
different colours, the Siamese and the Oriental Shorthair arrived in Great Britain at the end of
the XIXe century. In 1968 the difference between American breeders, who preferred a
Siamese-like body type and the English breeders, who favoured a more rounded body, is seen.
Despite the CFA recognizing it as the Oriental Shorthair, it became homologous to the Oriental
Longhair (Mandarin) in 1994.
Personality: They tend to be playful and active cats, with a slightly proud attitude. They
normally enjoy children, and do not tolerate being alone.
Additional notes: The queen (female cat) will reach her sexual puberty very early, around 9
months and will tend to be in heat quite often. They are low maintenance cats, who require
weekly grooming.
