Origin and history: The Turkish Angora is an ancient and pure breed. In the 17 th century, Italian
explorer Pietro Della Valle brought some subjects back to his country. Since it had an
immaculate fur, it represented a “royal” gift and was appreciated by all the European aristocracy,
especially the court of Louis XV. In the 18 th century, to distinguish it from domestic cat and
Chartreux, Linne calls it Cattus angorensis and Buffon describes the “cat of Angora all white and
long hair”. In the 19 th century, the breed nearly disappeared, falling victim to the great success of
the Persian cat and since World War 2, the breed has been on the verge of extinction. Breeders in
Europe and the United States imported Angora’s from Turkey, where the breed is currently
protected. The CFA registered the first subjects in 1970 and acknowledged the breed in 1973.
The FIFe did the same in 1988.
Personalite: The Turkish Angora is balanced, active, bright and playful, but equally calm. He is
very sociable with his companions as well as dogs he has been accustomed to. He adapts easily
to new environments so travel is no problem to him. Very affectionate and extremely sensitive,
he loves cuddles and can become attached. He is talkative, yet his meow’s are soft. Robust,
athletic, agile, water-lover and hunter, he needs lots of space.
Note: Maintenance is easy with the Turkish Angora because he practically does not have an
undercoat. A weekly brushing is sufficient. When shedding is abundant, it will be daily.
