races, such as the British Shorthair, the Burmese and the Persian. In 1904, la CFA registered
“Buster Brown”, who had received blood from the British Shorthair, as the first American
Shorthair. Up until the 60’s, it was called the “Domestic Shorthair, and in 1966, the race was
officially recognized under the name of American Shorthair. The FIFe has not recognized it.
Personality: The American Shorthair is an easy-going cat, ideal for a large family, whether it be
humans or other pets. Social, playful, and athletic, he is made to live outside, especially since he
proves to be a formidable hunter. However, he accepts a life in an apartment.
Notes: Very rustic and solid, the American Shorthair starts puberty early (beginning at 7 to 8
months). Also, he is easy to maintain with a weekly brushing. When he starts shedding, however,
it will be daily.
