Is your dog itching all the time?

There are many causes behind pruritus in dogs

They can be classified in 6 main categories:

  • parasites (ex. flees, mange, mites, ticks, etc.)
  • allergies (ex. environmental, food, contact, insect bites)
  • infections/inflammation (ex. bacteria, yeast, ringworm, contact with irritants)
  • immune (ex. skin's reaction with a medication)
  • tumoral (cancerous)
  • neurological

Factors that affect intensify itching

Dogs can experience severe itching depending on the situation. For instance, the skin's temperature can have an influence. In effect, itching is less intense when the skin is cold, but is the opposite when the skin is hot.

Furthermore, the skin's moisture content also plays a role in the itching's intensity. For example, dry skin has a tendency to itch more than well-hydrated skin.

Finally, the dog's emotional state can also influence the pruritus' intensity. This is the case when the dog is anxious, stressed, or bored. The itching is usually very intense during these situations.

How do you find the real culprit?

As you may know, there are many things that can cause itching. The veterinarian usually has to perform a series of tests before finding what is responsible for the pruritus. With an exact diagnosis, he will be able to treat your pet properly and make him better more quickly.
